Pâtisserie Conté
Today we finally were able to enjoy what is said to be the "best patisserie in Toulouse", Pâtisserie Conté. This is very close to our school and has been a favorite of the past few weeks of some of our classmates. Pâtisserie Conté is on a high end street, nestled in between the Knoll store and the Louis Vuitton store. One can walk by it unnoticed very easily, as I had on a few occasions when walking around on my break.
When we walked in we were amazed at the beauty of the place. It is very elegant and the colors of all the pastries, which included not only your normal croissants, but also cakes (gateaux), tarts, and macarons seemed to catch your eye and make your mouth start to water. Since it was breakfast (petit dejeuner) I decided to go with the tarte poire chocolat (pear and chocolate tart) where my husband went with the forêt noire (dark chocolate cake with creme and cherries). These are by far the best pastries that we have had in France. The tarte poire chocolat had a crunchy, buttery bottom layer with chocolat pieces in it. On top of that was a creamy, almost cake-like topping with pears. It was very rich and delightful. My husband's cake was not a typical breakfast choice, but why not? It was so light and airy, but had the wonderful mix of chocolate and cherries.
We watched a steady flow of customers come in on this Sunday and order like it is a ritual to have a special treat to take home for the day from this small patisserie. We realized from our empty plates that we had our special treat for the day as well and if it weren't for the upcoming month of August and the store being closed for the next month, we very well may make Pàtisserie Comte a Sunday ritual for us too. Now we just will have a new experience in a month when we will be reminded again why this is the "best patisserie in Toulouse."
